Reigning World Champion in Lawn Bowling Brings National Level Skill to Sun City Center
The world of lawn bowling is not one that most people are familiar with but, for one Californian, this sport is more than just a hobby – it’s her life. Anne Nunes is the first American to become the world champion in lawn bowling and is now in Sun City Center for the 2023 National Championship tournament.
What is lawn bowling?
Lawn bowling is a game for all ages and abilities that is designed for larger groups to play together. The game involves rolling weighted, biased balls towards the target, or “jack”, and attempting to get as close as possible. It is a relaxing sport but it still requires precise technique.
The Start of Anne Nunes’ Journey
It all began when Anne’s dad started playing lawn bowling in the 1990s. She was instantly hooked and dove deeper and deeper into the sport. Anne competed in the world singles Champion of Champions tournament this past September and, to everyone’s surprise, won the title and became the first American to do so.
The 2023 National Championship Tournament
Now Anne is participating at the Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club in the 2023 National Championship tournament. Her success has ignited the game for locals and expert bowlers alike; Bob Fladung of Sun City Center is competing in the men’s singles this week, but he also coaches. His hope is that Anne will be able to defend her title to the world championship once again.
Full-Time Aerospace Engineer By Day, World Champion Lawn Bowler By Night
While she is a full-time aerospace engineer for Boeing in Southern California, Anne still finds the time to participate in local tournaments and defend her title. The tournament this week began Tuesday and will end on Saturday.
Will Anne Nunes Retain Her Title Again?
It remains to be seen if the world Champion bowler Anne Nunes will be able to repeat her success at the 2023 National Championship tournament in Sun City Center. One thing is for sure – this tournament is generating more interest in lawn bowling as a sport.
